Why Your Phone Won't Hit Those Numbers

Secondly, the sealed, compact body of a mobile phone traps heat-as the hard drive and USB controller heat up, both will automatically throttle their performance during data transfer. Thirdly, whilst many mid-range and entry-level mobile phones are equipped with USB-C ports, they only support USB 2.0 transfer speeds internally, meaning high-speed storage devices will automatically throttle their speed without warning.
A storage device rated at 300 MB/s on a laptop may only achieve 35–60 MB/s on a mobile phone-this discrepancy is entirely due to the mobile phone, not the storage device itself.
Large Files vs. Photo Batches

exFAT: The Safe Default
When you get a new storage device, there's no need to hesitate-simply format it to exFAT. This is the only file system that supports direct read and write access on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android systems, without the need to install any third-party software. When FAT32 Still Makes Sense

Many car head units and older electronics (pre-2010s TVs, standalone media players) only recognize FAT32. If the drive's main job is feeding one of these devices, use FAT32.
File systems such as NTFS (Windows-only) and APFS (Mac-only) are far less user-friendly: NTFS storage devices are completely unusable when plugged into an iPhone, and are typically read-only on Android devices; as for APFS, it is simply 'invisible' on Windows and Android systems.

Work through these four sections in order - each rules out the next.
Power and Heat
Symptom: The drive gets warm within a minute of plugging in, or connects and disconnects on its own.
